When people talk about the future of the Philadelphia Phillies, Justin Crawford’s name does not get mentioned enough.
Aidan Miller, the shortstop drafted in 2023, is discussed frequently. So too is Andrew Painter, who was drafted 13th overall in 2021. He was on his way to the show quickly but was sidelined and underwent Tommy John surgery in the latter part of 2023, keeping him on the shelf for a while. Painter, however, is expected to be called up in 2026.
So why is Crawford not a headline-grabber?
Miller hits bombs well over 400 feet. Painter throws a 100 mph fastball. Crawford is not flashy like the two of them, but his numbers do not lie.
The reality is that he will not be the next Bryce Harper. He is not expected to carry a lineup, but he will eventually be an integral piece. Unlike Miller and Painter, Crawford has not had an explosive start to his career. He has built steadily, and being steadfast does not make headlines.
While Painter and Miller dominated the headlines, Crawford quietly climbed the ladder, though he did have a big year in 2025 with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. With a batting average of .334, 47 RBI, seven home runs and 46 stolen bases, Crawford has made a name for himself and now folks are presuming he may be the starting center fielder for the Phillies on Opening Day.
At the plate, Crawford may not be a power hitter, but he can certainly do damage and is a lethal weapon on the base path. He puts a lot of pressure on defenses by taking extra bases. Because of that, he can turn a single into a scoring opportunity quickly. Crawford is the kind of player who does not grab headlines but will help win games.
The Phillies do not have a true center fielder who can cover ground and change a game with his legs. Center field is not a position you fake your way through, and Crawford does not look out of place there. He gets good reads off the bat and makes up ground quickly once advanced towards the ball. He has incredible speed, helping on plays that many center fielders would allow to turn into doubles instead of singles. Over the course of a long season, those small plays quietly save runs.
Looking ahead, Crawford’s timeline may depend less on hype and more on opportunity.
If the Phillies need defensive stability, a spark on the bases or consistent contact at the bottom of the lineup, his name will be difficult to ignore. He may not dominate headlines the way others in the system have, but if his steady climb continues, his MLB debut with the Phillies could arrive sooner than many expect.
Although he is not making headlines every day, he did make one that should bolster his credibility. When asked about Crawford’s future, Harper had just three words to say: "Sky’s the limit."
That kind of an endorsement from a team's franchise player speaks volumes.
