Rams live up to reputation with blockbuster trade for Chiefs All-Pro corner

"F--- them picks" isn't just a motto for the Los Angeles Rams. It's a way of life.

On Wednesday, the Rams once again uttered the common refrain by sending the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, along with 2026 fifth- and sixth-round picks plus a 2027 third, to the Kansas City Chiefs for 2023 first-team All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Corner was one of the biggest needs for Los Angeles this offseason, with defensive backs Cobie Durant, Derion Kendrick, Roger McCreary and Ahkello Witherspoon entering free agency.

By landing McDuffie — regardless of the price — it already sets Los Angeles on track as one of the offseason's biggest winners.

Trent McDuffie trade fits in line with aggressive Rams team-building approach

The Rams have been the league's most aggressive team in trading first-round picks over the past decade. Since 2017, Los Angeles has dealt every first-round pick except one, which it used on edge-rusher Jared Verse, the 2024 Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The front office most famously parted with four combined first-rounders in trades in 2019 and 2021, respectively, for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and quarterback Matthew Stafford, cornerstones of the organization's most recent Super Bowl win.

On Tuesday, Rams general manager Les Snead spoke with reporters about the team's approach to the draft, and the trade for McDuffie aligns with its goals.

"Our macro philosophy is, if we can use free agency to not be desperate in the draft, we more than likely will be better drafters because we're not reaching.

"There is a possibility, if you reach for a need when it's all said and done, you still have a need, but you used a draft pick on it," Snead said, per the Rams' official team website.

Even after adding McDuffie, Los Angeles still possesses the No. 13 pick thanks to last year's draft day trade with the Atlanta Falcons, which it can use on the best player available instead of forcing a pick at corner if the top options are off the board. It could also trade back and recoup some of the capital lost in the McDuffie deal.

Landing McDuffie gives the Rams options entering free agency, which officially opens at the start of the 2026 league year on Mar. 11 at 4 p.m. ET. It also perfectly aligns with the team's ethos. Picks are only as good as what teams use them on, and Los Angeles got another difference-maker with its first-rounder.

It's hard — impossible, some may say — to argue against the approach when the results speak for themselves.
