Luka Doncic hit the game-winning shot in overtime for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. But to make it to the extra period, the Lakers needed a clutch miss from Austin Reaves.
With 5.2 seconds to go and his team down two points, Reaves missed his second free throw intentionally, grabbed the rebound and sank a floater to tie the game and send it to OT. The big shot — and big miss — gave the Lakers their fifth straight win and a big advantage over their Western Conference rivals.
Doncic finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists in the 127-125 win that won the Lakers their season series with the Nuggets. That gives them the tiebreaker in playoff seeding, as well as a 1.5-game lead on the Nuggets, who eliminated the Lakers from the playoffs in both 2023 and 2024.
That was often due to the heroics of Nikola Jokic, who was slowed Saturday by a Lakers defense designed to stop him. He still came through with 24 points, 16 rebounds and 14 assists, but the Nuggets needed Aaron Gordon (27 points) and Tim Hardaway, Jr. (20 points) on a night where All-Star Jamal Murray shot 1-for-14.
But even with Murray struggling and Jokic getting double-teamed, Hardaway's three-pointer put the Nuggets ahead, after a pinpoint crosscourt pass from Jokic.

WHAT A PASS BY JOKIĆ

When Jokic blocked Reaves on the other end., Gordon could have put the game out of reach, but he split his two free throws. The teams traded intentional fouls and free throws before Denver sent Reaves to the line with 5.2 seconds left, trailing by three. He made one freebie, then delivered a textbook intentional miss, sending himself the rebound and tying the game.

The Lakers pulled overtime out of the jaws of defeat, and the extra period was no less of a battle than the end of the fourth quarter. The Nuggets didn't make a field goal until Aaron Gordon's three put them ahead with 47 seconds to go. Doncic showed off his own passing, finding Marcus Smart for a go-ahead three with a behind-the-back pass.

After Jokic tied it, Doncic made sure there'd be no double overtime. He evaded a Nuggets double-team and sank the game-winner with less than a second to play.

It was a huge victory for the Lakers, beyond the relevance to the standings. Jokic and the Nuggets have stood in the Lakers' way for years, but since the Lakers traded for Luka Doncic, L.A. is 4-2 against Denver.
It's generally been the Nuggets hitting big shots to break the Lakers' hearts, with Murray often doing the damage. Now the Lakers have the personnel to make — and miss — shots when it matters.
