There was a period of time after the Green Bay Packers blew an 18-point lead en route to suffering a 31-27 wild-card playoff loss to the rival Chicago Bears in January when it seemed as if the Packers would part ways with head coach Matt LaFleur.
However, the club confirmed later that same month that LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball had all signed extensions to stay put.
While speaking at a recent event, Packers quarterback Jordan Love opened up about the return of the only head coach Love has had since the Packers made him a first-round pick during the 2020 NFL Draft.
"Yeah, it was great," Love explained, as shared by Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "...That's been my head coach since I got here, that's the coach who drafted me. So, being able to keep Matt around is awesome. I'm very happy about that. I think anytime in the NFL -- I've done this in college -- where the coaches leave and you're in a new system, it's tough. It's a lot to be able to learn a whole new system, a new terminology."
Back in the middle of January, some speculated the Packers could trade LaFleur's rights so that they could then hire former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh instead put pen to paper on a deal with the New York Giants.
While LaFleur has guided the Packers to the playoffs six times across seven seasons, Green Bay has never appeared in a Super Bowl under his watch. As for Love, he signed a four-year, $220M deal in the summer of 2024.
"For a quarterback to be able to stay in the same system and keep the same terminology," Love continued, "it definitely helps me and my teammates out that we can hit the ground running when we get to (organized team activities) and just build off what we've done the last couple years."
As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Packers tied for sixth among the betting favorites at +1500 odds to win Super Bowl LXI in February 2027.
