Blue Jays dealt another blow after George Springer exits loss with injury

The Toronto Blue Jays are quickly learning that repeating as American League champs won't be easy.

On Saturday, designated hitter George Springer exited a 7-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins following a third-inning at-bat after fracturing his left big toe on a foul ball.

Following the game, manager John Schneider shared the 13-year veteran was set to undergo imaging, and the team will "know more in the next couple of days."

George Springer set to miss unspecified amount of time after fracturing big toe

Springer's injury comes amid a ho-hum 6-8 start for the Blue Jays, who reached the World Series for the first time since 1993 last season, losing a thrilling seven-game series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As the AP notes, Toronto has been hit hard by injuries out of the gate in 2026, with outfielders Addison Barger and Anthony Santander and catcher Alejandro Kirk also currently on the injured list.

Depending on the severity of Springer's injury, he could miss anywhere from a couple of weeks to potentially months. Until he's back, the Blue Jays will need another leadoff hitter.

It will also prevent Springer from finding his stride after a slow start to the year. Before leaving with the fractured toe, Springer was slashing .185/.290/.370 with 14 strikeouts and eight walks.

Toronto has dropped seven of its last nine. Following Sunday's finale with the Twins, the Blue Jays go on the road for nine games — against the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels.

They don't have their first AL East series until the end of April, when they host the Boston Red Sox from the 27th through the 29th. By then, perhaps Springer will be back at the plate.

Until then, Toronto must find its way out of the early-season slump without him.
