The New York Giants' front seven could look quite different in the first year of the John Harbaugh era.
Star DL Dexter Lawrence II has already requested a trade, and former No. 5 pick Kayvon Thibodeaux might also be on his way out.
While they want to hold onto a star like Lawrence, Thibodeaux has failed to live up to expectations and is entering the final year of his deal.
Considering that, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of Sportsboom gathered intel on his potential trade value.
“I think Thibodeaux is gone if they can get a third for him,” one veteran executive told La Canfora.
The Giants, who have the No. 5 pick, can bolster the pass rush with multiple options like David Bailey or Rueben Bain Jr. or add a star to the secondary with Caleb Downs.
Whatever the case, the executive believes they have a strong opportunity to start the John Harbaugh era with a clean slate, so they should probably move on from both of their linemen.
“That’s a guess, but it’s a deep edge class…If I were the Giants in Year One of a new program I would be tempted to move both players (Lawrence and Thibodeaux) in separate deals for a 1 (or the equivalent of a first-round pick on the trade chart), two threes and a useful player or two and save roughly $28M in cap room this year and next year and about $35M and $21M in cash,” added the executive.
The Giants had a stout defensive line last season, but with Abdul Carter and Brian Burns locked in as starters, Thibodeaux is simply the odd man out.
He has the physical tools to be a dominant pass rusher, and perhaps he just needs a change of scenery to do so. Also, with just one year left on his contract, there's little downside to committing a mid-round pick to get him on a rental.
