Sophie Cunningham explains why she returned to Fever

With the new CBA already in place, the free-agency frenzy has taken the WNBA by storm.

The Indiana Fever have made some big moves ahead of Monday's 2026 WNBA Draft, including re-signing Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull and signing Monique Billings.

However, bringing back Sophie Cunningham was perhaps the most interesting move they made this week, given her status as a fan favorite and polarizing figure in the league. With that in mind, the former Phoenix Mercury guard shared a candid message about her return to the Fever.

Sophie Cunningham reacts to new deal with Fever

"We had a really special group last year, and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy. I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization," Cunningham said.

Cunningham made 30 appearances for the Fever before a season-ending injury, posting averages of 8.6 points, 3.5 assists, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. Now, she's eager to finish the job in her second season by Caitlin Clark's side.

"We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started. I have a feeling this is going to be another special season," Cunningham continued. "So I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!"

As things stand now, the Fever only have seven players under contract, but it shouldn't be long before more stars join Clark and Cunningham. Clark also missed the final stretch of the season with a right groin injury and an ankle injury, and she'll be thirsty for revenge after a disappointing and injury-riddled second campaign in the league. As for Cunningham, WNBA fans will see a lot of her, as she will also serve as a special contributor to USA Network's coverage of the league.
