Vision at Texas Tech leads to major commitment from five-star EDGE Anthony Sweeney

Anthony Sweeney is one of the top overall recruits in the country, so it's no surprise that he has plenty of options when it comes to where he can play college ball.

Sweeney is a five-star EDGE recruit from Baltimore, Md., and he boasts offers from over 40 schools.

He was able to narrow things down to three programs, though. The LSU Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks were high on his list. The Texas Tech Red Raiders also made an appearance in his top three.

Sweeney took a three-day trip to Lubbock in early April, and that was all it took to seal the deal with the Red Raiders, though.

“It happened a lot faster than I expected,” Sweeney told Rivals. “I went into that visit expecting to come out, continue to take visits, get to some official visits, then make a tough decision in the summer. That visit really changed everything for me.“

Sweeney made his decision public with a commitment to head coach Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders on Monday.

Turnaround at Texas Tech leads to big recruiting win

Texas had long toiled in mediocrity in the Big 12, but things have changed under McGuire.

He's gone 35-18 in four seasons as head coach, and last season, he took the Red Raiders to the College Football Playoffs.

McGuire has been a huge part of the turnaround at Tech, but the school and, specifically, donors, have also invested heavily via NIL into the football program.

The change in evident in the standings and also on the recruiting trail.

“He’s building something big,” Sweeney said of McGuire. “They’re already competing, and I believe they can get to the top. They were in the playoffs last year, and he has made Texas Tech into a national contender.“

According to the 247Sports Composite, Sweeney is the No. 3 EDGE in the 2027 class and the No. 21 recruit overall. He's Texas Tech's seventh 2027 commitment.
