Michigan trending after 4-star QB Kamden Lopati decommits from Illinois

Kamden Lopati had been committed to the Illinois Fighting Illini since July of 2025.

Now, almost a year later, that's a commitment that doesn't hold. Lopati, a 4-star quarterback from Salt Lake City, Utah, has decommitted from the Fighting Illini.

It's a tough loss for Illinois because Lopati is a notable 2027 recruit. He's ranked as the No. 9 quarterback in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Illinois' loss could end up being the Michigan Wolverines' gain, though.

There are also a few other programs that could find themselves in the mix.

This spring, the 4-star quarterback took unofficial visits to Michigan, Notre Dame, Duke, and Cal. The Georgia Bulldogs are looking for a quarterback for their 2027 class, and according to Eli Lederman of ESPN, the Bulldogs are also now in the running for Lopati's next commitment.

Michigan is trending for Lopati for a reason, though.

Michigan a favorite to land 4-star QB Kamden Lapoti

“An offer from University of Michigan is huge,” Lopati recently told Rivals. “Growing up watching the tradition, the history, and the stage they play on, it’s hard not to get excited about that opportunity."

The quarterback is also close with new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck. Both had recruited him hard when they were at Utah and as Wolverines, they got him into Ann Arbor recently for a multi-day visit.

"I just want to make sure my commitment's the right fit," Lopati had told ESPN last month before his big string of visits. "Illinois knows how I feel about them, and I know I'm a priority for them. They've always made me feel that way. But I want to be open-minded and make sure I've made the right decision."

Lopati opened his mind and found out that the Fighting Illini aren't part of his future.

Could the Wovlerines be on the horizon?

It certainly seems like it, but only time will tell.
