It's been a tough pill to swallow for Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Taijuan Walker. His struggles have been prevalent in the first inning, where he has given up 11 runs across four starts.
He has posted an alarming first-inning ERA of 27.00, showcasing his weakness with retiring batters. His opening frame struggles have contributed to the Phillies having a rocky start early this season.
Walker's first-inning woes have made it difficult for the Phillies to play catch-up in games.
The added pressure has left them in difficult situations, forcing them to rely on their bullpen early in games.
Taijuan Walker has allowed 11 first-inning runs in four starts this season. That's more than 16 teams have allowed in the first inning all season.

Opponents have been hitting over .500 in the first inning against the 33-year-old right-handed starter. To make matters worse, batters have also recorded a 1.053 OPS in the first inning against the veteran.
Walker's troubles in the first inning have been linked to reduced velocity and a lack of intensity and urgency. While he's shown how he can settle down after the first inning, the high damage caused early has been a major area of concern.

But in Friday night's 9-0 loss against the Atlanta Braves, Walker's struggles carried forward after the first inning. He gave up a three-run bomb to Austin Riley and a solo home run to Dominic Smith. He was charged with seven earned runs, demonstrating his lingering issues.
Walker will remain in the rotation upon the return of Zack Wheeler, who has been rehabbing a blood clot in his right shoulder. Wheeler is expected to return to the rotation at the end of April, which could force Walker into a bullpen role.
But considering the continuous disappointment with him, it's made people question why he wouldn't be designated for assignment following Wheeler's return.
