49ers' Brock Purdy may have been looking for pay day from new teammate Mike Evans

Roughly one month after longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans left the club to sign with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, it was leaked that he would be switching from No. 13 to No. 5.

The 49ers' No. 13 is currently possessed by starting quarterback Brock Purdy. It sounds like Purdy may have been hoping to hear from Evans regarding a potential business arrangement this spring.

A number is worth only so much to Mike Evans

According to David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone, Purdy revealed while speaking with reporters on Monday that he was never approached by Evans about the No. 13 jersey.

"Thirteen, I feel like, for me, is my number," Purdy explained. "So, he'd have to put a big price tag on it."

Purdy was referring to how players have been willing to pay teammates for jersey numbers in certain situations. Of course, neither Evans nor Purdy is hurting for money these days. Evans has made a fortune throughout his career, while Purdy signed a five-year, $265M contract extension that included $181M in guarantees last offseason.

Brock Purdy focused on this aspect of having Mike Evans as a teammate

In Evans, Purdy now has a teammate responsible for a streak of recording at least 1,000 receiving yards in a campaign that ended at 11 seasons this past January after he missed time due to multiple physical setbacks. On Monday, Purdy noted that he's hyped to throw passes to the 32-year-old who has experience serving as a No. 1 target for the likes of Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield.

"He's obviously a big frame, which is always nice for a quarterback, especially outside at receiver," Purdy added about Evans. "But also, even going into the red zone and stuff, just sort of watching some clips of what him and Tom and Baker did with certain routes that he did, and creating leverage, and being able to throw up back-shoulders, and just really getting that guy in one-on-one situations. I think, as a quarterback, you sort of dream of those kind of situations. And so, watching the film and understanding, 'Alright, this is a guy that can help me with my game, just being aggressive and taking those one-on-one shots.' And also, watching his route-running ability, his quick game, and the in-breakers—he can do everything."

Neither Purdy nor Evans will care all that much about who has the No. 13 on his jersey if the two of them get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February 2027.
