Tommy Pham should be first of Mets' changes

The Tommy Pham era did not last long for the New York Mets.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that the Mets designated Pham for assignment on Sunday. He had been 0-13 with a walk and seven strikeouts.

The 38-year-old outfielder is hardly the only member of the Mets who has struggled in the early going. After losing both games of their doubleheader, the Mets are 9-19, their worst start through 28 games since 1983, and have been swept in four of their past five series. They have scored one or fewer runs in 10 games, the most in the majors.

Drastic changes need to come for New York Mets

Another team off to a disappointing start has already made drastic changes. The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and several members of the coaching staff on Saturday. The Red Sox held a 10-17 record at the time and were in the AL East basement.

The Mets are in worse shape. Their 9-19 record is tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the worst in the majors while their 92 runs scored is the fewest of any major league team. Outfielder Juan Soto, catcher Francisco Alvarez and designated hitter MJ Melendez were the only healthy hitters on the roster with an OPS+ over 100 (league average) entering Sunday.

The Mets entered the season with postseason aspirations after a disappointing 2025 season. The roster saw a major overhaul during the offseason. There is little that can be done to change the roster at this point. It may be a matter of time until manager Carlos Mendoza and/or parts of the coaching staff meet the same fate as Cora and his coaches.
