A Cleveland Browns team that currently has 2025 fifth-round draft pick Shedeur Sanders, veteran Deshaun Watson and 2025 third-round choice Dillon Gabriel on the roster raised eyebrows when it grabbed Arkansas signal-caller Taylen Green in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
A previous report hinted that the Browns "might consider trading" Gabriel if the club acquired a new quarterback during this year's player-selection process. However, it sounds like Browns general manager Andrew Berry wants it known that Gabriel won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
"I have learned the hard way not to say anything definitively," Berry said when asked about Cleveland's quarterback situation, per the Browns' website. "The current plan is that we would roll with those four. I can’t predict if something else comes up. So, yes, that would be the intention."
Before the draft, Browns head coach Todd Monken insisted that the competition for the starting quarterback job isn't "a two-man race" led by Sanders and Watson. That said, it seems to outsiders that Gabriel is the club's third-choice option at the position. Green presumably could take that role over later this year.
"We do believe in keeping three on the active roster and ideally a fourth on the practice squad," Berry said about the team's quarterbacks. "There is attrition throughout the year. And I think the other element is it’s never a problem to have too many good players. It just isn’t. Like, even as I think through last year with that position, we had two young guys, two vets who either got hurt or at one point were no longer the starter because of performance. And we were able to turn those players into resources that could help the team this upcoming offseason."
Some understandably wondered if the Browns could look to change Green's position since he possesses what Berry referred to as "rare physical gifts." According to Berry, Cleveland will not be making such a move this spring.
"He’s playing quarterback," Berry said about Green. "He’s playing quarterback."
Assuming Berry is telling the truth, it sounds like Sanders or Gabriel could become surplus to requirements for the Browns by the time August comes to an end. It would be surprising if Sanders is the odd man out later this summer, but questions about his future will hover over the Browns as long as the club also has Gabriel stashed on the roster.
