Cherie DeVaux makes history as first woman trainer to win Kentucky Derby

In a fitting end, Golden Tempo ran at the perfect pace to secure an historic Kentucky Derby win.

In the 152nd running, Cherie DeVaux became the first woman trainer to make the winner's circle, and she did so in one of the race's more thrilling comebacks in recent memory.

Golden Tempo mounted a huge comeback, falling behind the pack early only to mount a blistering surge down the stretch to beat out the field and cross the finish line first.

While trying to find the words to describe the monumental win, DeVaux first credited Golden Tempo and jockey Luis Ortiz, whose brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., was the jockey on runner-up Renegade.

Later, she added, "I'm glad that I can be a representative of all women everywhere, that we can do anything we set our minds to."

A 2026 Kentucky Derby win didn't appear likely midway through the race as Golden Tempo, who entered the starting gate with 23-1 odds, fell far behind the 18-horse field after The Puma and Great White were scratched pre-race.

Golden Tempo also dealt with cracked heels before the race, requiring DeVaux to alter his training schedule in the lead-up to Saturday.

On Tuesday, she spoke with FanDuel TV and stressed it wasn't a serious setback.

"He's happy," DeVaux said. "It's just one of those— just want to make sure he's as comfortable as he can be for the big day."

Up next for Golden Tempo is the Preakness, which is held on May 16. However, several recent Derby winners, including Sovereignty and Rich Strike, have been held from the second leg of the Triple Crown in recent years, so it's no sure thing that Golden Tempo will get a chance to become the first horse since Justify (2018) to win all three events, also including the Belmont Stakes.

DeVaux has a few days to decide what's next for her history-making colt. Until then, she can celebrate shattering the glass ceiling.
