Patrick Corbin has effectively stabilized the Blue Jays rotation

When the Toronto Blue Jays signed Patrick Corbin to a one-year, $1 million deal in early April, there were hesitations about how he would perform.

But he was a low-risk, high-reward signing and a veteran, and he has put up a respectable ERA of 3.65 across five games. But most importantly, he has been an anchor amid the rotation injuries.

He's helped stabilize the rotation by providing consistency in competitive situations. The Blue Jays have gone 4-1 through his five starts, pointing to his efficiency.

In his last start, he provided durability, going 5.1 innings and allowing the bullpen to rest. Despite a rocky debut in which he gave up five earned runs, he has settled into the rotation.

Patrick Corbin has effectively mixed his pitches for Blue Jays

Corbin's arsenal has incorporated a strong and effective sinker-slider mix that's worked well against batters. He turns to the sinker the most, about 34% of the time.

In addition, he's relied on movement with his fastball instead of unleashing excessive velocity (91.3 mph). His 1.09 WHIP across 14.2 innings pairs well with a solid walk-rate of 6.9% (75th percentile) and an extension of 6.7 feet (73rd percentile).

What does the future hold for Patrick Corbin?

Having Corbin in the rotation has provided much-needed insurance leverage as well as consistency as the team waits for Jose Berrios, Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber to return.

So where does that leave Corbin's role in the future with the Blue Jays? He will likely function in a long-relief bullpen role.

With the steady rhythm he's displayed in the rotation, he's shown improvement following previous struggles in his career. Overall, he's now a solid depth piece for the Blue Jays.
