There was some awkwardness on the set of "Inside the NBA" this past week when Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green took an unbelievable shot at the end of Charles Barkley's career. In a discussion about where the Warriors go next and what their short-term future looks like, Barkley pointed out that professional sports is a young man's game and that older teams like the Warriors no longer win. Green's response to say their goal was to not look like Barkley did during his final years with the Houston Rockets.
It was a wild comment given that Barkley was still a high-level player in Houston, and performing at a level that still exceeded what Green normally does.
On Friday, Barkley offered a pretty incredible response of his own.
During an appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show," Barkley addressed the comment from Green and said he doesn't take things personally and doesn't get offended. He also acknowledged that while he always tries to keep his analysis relevant to the topic at hand, he has at times taken his own shots at people.
But he also doubled down on his initial commentary on where the Warriors are and continued to insist it is over for them as a championship team due to their age. He not only doubled down, but he said the Warriors have been irrelevant for a few years now because they have consistently been in the play-in game tournament and, in Barkley's mind, that's not really the playoffs.
He then added, if Golden State were still relevant in the NBA, Green wouldn't be in the studio with him. He would be on the floor playing in playoff games.
“He took a shot at me, but I don’t get offended. I’ve said things about other guys. They’ve took personal shots at me,” Barkley said. “... The Warriors have been in the play-in four straight years. They’ve been irrelevant. I know he doesn’t want to say it. ... The notion that him and Steph are gonna get better when they get healthy and being a year older? They're not. They're just gonna get older, Dan. So, it's over for Golden State. They had a great run. He took a personal shot at me, but I'm not sensitive. But it's been over in Golden State. If Golden State was relevant, he wouldn’t be in the studio with me.”

All of this is fair.
Barkley was not wrong about his initial comments, and it is his job on ESPN to offer his opinion and commentary on teams. Nothing he said about the Warriors was out of line, and he took no personal shots at Green.
He is also spot on about why Green is in the studio instead of playing second-round playoff games — it is because the Warriors are no longer on that level.
Green, as an active player, is also well within his right to defend his team. He is not going to approach a season with the mindset that his team cannot win. No professional athlete does that. Of course he is going to push back.
Where he crossed the line was making it personal about one of the game's all-time greatest players, not to mention a player who was multiple levels above what Green has been even at his best.
Green has never been shy about his opinions, and "Inside the NBA" is at times a wild, wild west environment where anything goes. But that usually revolves around the context of the hosts having known each other for years and developing a rapport with one another. It's tough for somebody new to join that and try to make outlandish comments of their own. It probably will not go over well. Especially when it is that personal.
