Trying to get back on track at the start of a new series, the Seattle Mariners scored six runs off eight hits in a 6-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.
But even though last season's American League runner-up is facing pressure to build a win streak while in the midst of a 23-26 start to the 2026 MLB season, just winning isn't the headline story from the game for Seattle.
A rookie was a big part of the Mariners' offensive output. Third baseman Colt Emerson, 20, crushed his first MLB home run in his last at-bat of the game in the eighth inning.
His first home run was also his first hit in the big leagues in general, marking the first time a player at his age slugged a home run as his first career hit in three years — Jasson Dominguez also did it in 2023.
Emerson's long ball was a dramatic one, too. He connected on a 2-2 pitch with two runners already aboard, helping to put the game out of reach for his team. The ball barely got over the fence, but it counts as a three-run bomb no matter how far it traveled.

No stranger to hitting home runs in general, Emerson crushed seven in the minors with Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League before being called up by Seattle ahead of Monday's major league debut.
Emerson, whom the Mariners selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, now provides Seattle with another piece for both the present and the future. And no matter what happens throughout the rest of his rookie season, he will always have a memorable first night to look back on.
