James Wood has served as a young cornerstone slugger who the Washington Nationals need to prioritize extending. At only 23 years old, Wood profiles as the focal point of Washington's rebuilding process.

He is a mix of an MVP-level power and on-base threat that makes him a player the franchise should lock down long-term to prevent past mishaps of homegrown talents leaving.

Juan Soto and Bryce Harper are two notable talents who departed the Nationals. Extending Wood avoids a similar situation and proves that the White Sox are dedicated to locking in their top-tier talent.

Wood, a 6-foot-7 marvel, boasts elite power with an incredible eye at the plate. His strength as a versatile hitter who draws walks establishes him as a lineup anchor for the future.

His maturity at the plate comes from his strong 22.6% chase rate and masterful 17.2% walk rate. He also sits in the 100th percentile with an average exit velocity of 96.4 mph and a hard-hit rate of 61%.

Securing Wood on a long-term contract now prevents ascending market prices. As well, with hefty extensions handed out to other young talents, buying out his early free-agency years gives the Nationals a stellar long-term asset.

Wood was an All-Star in 2025 and has undoubtedly transformed into a stabilizing force for the Nationals. He's also evolved into a gratifying young MLB hitter, and locking him in early provides the White Sox with a cost-effective cornerstone.
