Lakers' LeBron James outlines timeline for deciding plans for this upcoming season

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is thinking about his family vacation more than his NBA future.

Where will he and his family go? Tahiti? Fiji? Wherever James travels, he could use the downtime to ponder his plans for this upcoming season, which he seems uncertain about.

LeBron James discusses NBA future

"I'm still in the moment of taking my time. I haven't even really thought about it too much," James told former Phoenix Suns star/Amazon Prime analyst Steve Nash on Thursday's "Mind The Game." "Obviously, I understand that I'm a free agent, and I can control my own destiny, whether it's being here with [the Lakers] for the foreseeable future or going somewhere else.

"But I really haven't even gotten to that point. I haven't even taken my family vacation yet, which is going to happen after Memorial Day. That's kind of the thing at the forefront of my mind."

After that, James will have a clearer idea of what he wants to do.

"I think at some point, up in June, late June as July rolls around, free agency gets going. As July's rolling maybe into August, we start to kind of get a feel of what my future may look like, if it's continuing to play the game I love —which I know I can still give so much to the game, and play at a high level — or if it's not. But I have not gotten to that point yet," James said.

James, 41, retiring would be a surprise. The forward has plenty of gas left in the tank. This past season, he played 60 regular-season games, ranking 26th in the NBA in scoring (20.9 points per game), 28th in field-goal percentage (51.5 percent) and seventh in assists (7.2 per game). He was selected for his 22nd All-Star Game as well.

Will he return to the Lakers? L.A. general manager/president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka said during his end-of-season news conference on May 12 that the franchise won't rush James and would love to have him back. But the executive also said building around guard Luka Doncic, 27, is the team's top priority.

Would James be willing to accept a lesser role in L.A.? And would he be willing to do that for a team that has failed to build championship-quality rosters since winning its last title during the 2019-20 season?

The Lakers haven't reached the Western Conference Finals since the 2022-23 season and have been eliminated in the first round three times over the past six seasons. This past season, the Oklahoma City Thunder swept them in the second round. James emphasized he wants to play for an organization that can help him win his fifth championship.

"Winning is most important because you want to be excited about going to work every day," James said. "You want to be excited about, like I said earlier, winning the day, and being around a group of guys that feel the same way."

Family still comes above winning for "King James." He said it will have some say in where he plays next season. The forward could seek input from his family during vacation to help form his decision.
