Very few drivers in the history of NASCAR have blended talent with both speed and the versatility of Kyle Busch. Whether you loved him or hated him every Sunday, he compiled one of the most successful careers in NASCAR history.
Busch's most defining moment arguably came in 2015 when he was absent from the first 11 races of the NASCAR Cup Series season due to serious leg and foot injuries that he suffered in a crash at Daytona in the Xfinity Series opener.
In essence, his championship hopes seemed over before they ever began. Instead, Busch battled back with five race wins since his return and won his first Cup Series championship at Homestead Miami Speedway. It is one of the best comeback stories the sport has ever seen.
He achieved another legendary feat in 2010 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch was the first driver ever to win races in all three NASCAR national series over a single weekend. Busch won the Truck Series race, the Xfinity Series race and then won the Cup Series race.
He did so again at Bristol in 2017 to prove his short-track domination once more.
Busch became the one of the greatest Xfinity Series drivers of all time. In 2009, he won the Xfinity Series Championship and won nine series races along the way. A year later, Busch broke a modern-era record by winning 13 Xfinity Series races in one season. He holds the all-time record for Xfinity Series wins with 102 in his career.
Busch was also very successful on other tracks as well. He has been crowned the winningest driver in NASCAR national series history with over 200 combined victories between the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Truck Series. He is also the only driver with 60-plus victories in each of the three national series.
Busch’s second career Cup Series title came in the 2019 season. Although he had only five wins that year, he was competitive on a consistent basis and performed at the right times, ultimately bringing home another title in Homestead.
Another track on Busch's resume was Richmond Raceway, where between 2009-2012 he put together four straight wins in the spring Cup Series race, which set the mark at the track. Bristol, Martinsville and other intense short tracks also gave Busch a lot of success where he could be competitive due to his driving style.
One of Busch's accomplishments that gets overlooked is his 2008 season with Joe Gibbs Racing in his first year in the Cup Series. During that season, he won eight races and helped get Toyota its first Cup Series win at Atlanta Motor Speedway, becoming one of the best in the sport.
Busch’s impact extended beyond NASCAR Cup racing. He built Kyle Busch Motorsports into one of the premier Truck Series organizations, helping develop future stars while winning multiple owner championships.
At his best, Busch was fearless, emotional and incredibly fast. Few drivers in NASCAR history matched his ability to win across every type of track and every level of stock car racing.
