Reid Detmers posts an Angels' all-time high strikeout total vs. Rangers

Getting it done in dramatic fashion, the struggling Los Angeles Angels secured a rare sweep on Sunday night. Thanks to a walk-off aided by an errant throw, the Angels beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 to win three in a row as a response to losing three straight to the Athletics earlier in the week.

But the Angels' walk-off victory did more than just salvage a game and build a mini win streak; it also saved them from wasting a dominant start from Reid Detmers.

Reid Detmers put up one of the Angels' top games for strikeouts all-time

The left-hander recorded 14 strikeouts in his best start of the season to date. Detmers became the first Angels pitcher to fan Andrew Heaney in a game since 2019.

Both Detmers and Heaney still ended up five shy of the franchise's single-game high in their respective performances.

Nolan Ryan enjoyed some of the most dominant starts of his career as an Angel

Nolan Ryan posted three separate 19-strikeout games (8/12/1974, 8/20/1974, 6/08/1977) during his tenure with the then-California Angels.

In addition to his strikeout total, Detmers allowed only one run in eight innings while only surrendering one hit and one walk.

Angels still needed a walk-off in the ninth to win the game

Not enough to earn a personal win due to a lack of run support, Detmers' outing served as a nice response after giving up eight runs off eight hits against the Athletics in a loss in his last appearance on the mound on May 19. He even allowed at least two runs in each of his previous six starts before Sunday.

Detmers is only 1-5 with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP on the year. He now has 75 strikeouts and 19 walks.
