It was recently learned that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice would have to serve 30 days in a Dallas County jail while recovering from knee surgery after he violated his probation by failing a marijuana test.
This is one of multiple off-the-field issues the Chiefs have had to deal with since they selected Rice in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid seemed to send a message to Rice regarding what will be expected of the 26-year-old moving forward.
"It's not an easy thing he's going through," Reid said about Rice, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Life lessons are important, but we’re all given chances to learn, and so he’s in that position now."
For an article published this past Tuesday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that Rice hasn't yet shown he's capable of learning the lessons mentioned by Reid.
"It’s about the reputation he had coming out of college at SMU, and the 2024 hit-and-run that landed him the 30-day sentence the positive drug test triggered in the first place," Breer wrote while explaining why the Chiefs can't "trust" Rice. "It’s about him allegedly punching a photographer less than two months later, and how he has slipped up again — regardless of how it went down or what it was for."
Rice ultimately had to serve a suspension of six games last season for violating the league's personal conduct policy regarding the previously mentioned crash. As ESPN's Nate Taylor noted, Rice pleaded guilty in district court to two third-degree felony charges and received deferred adjudication along with five years of probation.
Recent stories have linked the Chiefs with some big-name receivers, but the club hadn't yet acquired such a target as of Friday morning. On Thursday, Reid indicated that he will welcome Rice back to the team with open arms in time for training camp.
"We're aware of the situation, and we've talked to the league," Reid added about Rice. "There's been no talk about anything further [as far as possible punishment from the NFL]. We're moving forward. When he gets back, we've got to get him caught up and doing what he needs to do."
Rice is in the final year of his rookie contract, and the Chiefs seemingly are in no hurry to sign him to a multiyear deal. For now, he will have to focus on returning to full fitness and proving to Reid that he can remain available through at least January 2027.
