Blue Jays OF Jesus Sanchez suffers most bizarre injury of MLB season

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesus Sanchez had to leave Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles (which the Orioles won by a 9-5 score) for a rather common injury that occurs in a baseball game.

There was just nothing common about the way it happened.

The injury: A bruised wrist after being hit by a baseball.

It was not a pitched baseball. It was not a baseball that was hit. It was thrown by a young fan in an apparent misunderstanding.

Sanchez was hit by the ball in the sixth inning during a stoppage in play. During that stoppage Sanchez looked up into the right field stands, with the ball flying in shortly after.

Sanchez said through an interpreter after the game that he believes the fan misunderstood what Sanchez was saying or gesturing toward them. 

It was reportedly a young fan who thought Sanchez was gesturing for a game of catch. 

"I wasn't trying to play catch right there," Sánchez said through an interpreter, per The Associated Press. "I just looked at them, and they thought maybe that I want them to throw the ball. It was a complete misunderstanding."

The Orioles announced that the fan was removed from the game and an investigation into the matter is taking place. 

Blue Jays manager John Schneider took the high road on the situation and tried to laugh it off as an unfortunate mistake.

"Yeah, you never know what you're going to see at the ballpark," Schneider said. "He was kind of talking to a, I think it was a 12-year-old kid ... in a playful manner, like almost, 'Let's play catch.' I think the kid took it literally."

"I'm sure the kid feels bad," he added. "I'm assuming there's no ill intent there. I think it was just a misunderstanding and bad timing."

It is probably easier to laugh it off when there is no serious injury. While Sanchez was wearing a bandage after the game, the injury is not believed to be anything serious and should not keep him out of the lineup for any extended period of time.

It is, however, one of the weirdest reasons a player has had to leave a game this season.

It will also be difficult to top.
