After really impressive dunks, people say the dunker put the defender on a poster. Victor Wembanyama's Game 7 dunk put Chet Holmgren on a missing person poster.
Less than three minutes into the San Antonio Spurs' 111-103 victory in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, Wembanyama caught a pass off a give-and-go and dunked over Holmgren's outstretched arm. The Oklahoma City Thunder big man didn't attempt another shot as the defending champions' season ended.
Holmgren made his first All-Star team this season, finished second to Wembanyama in the Defensive Player of the Year vote and was on the All-NBA third team. Very little of that was in evidence during Game 7, when Holmgren finished with four points and four rebounds, shooting 1-for-2 from the field and 2-for-4 from the foul line while committing two turnovers.
It was truly surprising that Holmgren barely participated in the Thunder's offense for the last 45 minutes of the game. The 24-year-old drew two fouls and made his biggest impact in the last three minutes, blocking one shot and getting a steal, but it was not what the Thunder needed from their ostensible No. 2 player.
It's hard not to connect Holmgren's passivity with the early Wembanyama posterization. Holmgren seemed to be avoiding confrontations with Wembanyama throughout the series, with Isaiah Hartenstein taking the primary defensive assignment on Wemby. After the dunk, Holmgren appeared reluctant even to touch the ball, finishing with zero assists as well.

The heated rivalry between Wemby and Holmgren stems from FIBA's Under-19 championship game in 2021. Team USA won a close game over Team France, 83-81. Wembanyama had 22 points, eight assists and eight blocks in the title game, while Holmgren had 10 points, two rebounds and five assists — and was named MVP of the tournament.
Wembanyama clearly wants to win against anyone, but he seems to especially savor it against Holmgren, perhaps still holding a grudge from 2021. For his part, Holmgren seemed to wilt under Wemby's pressure, averaging 10.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in the Western Conference Finals, compared to his 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in the regular season.
It's still almost unbelievable Holmgren didn't register a third field goal attempt in Game 7, and raises questions about how much the Thunder can rely on him in big games — and after his rookie maximum extension kicks in next season.
Holmgren is too talented not to bounce back next season, but his reputation took a big hit. First, Wembanyama dunked on Holmgren. Now he's being slammed by basketball fans and media alike.
