The offense of the Indianapolis Colts received a boost earlier this week when it was learned that quarterback Daniel Jones had been cleared to participate in 7-on-7 drills ahead of the club's mandatory minicamp.
It is scheduled to take place from June 12 through June 14, coming off the torn Achilles tendon he suffered on Dec. 7, 2025. For an update shared on Wednesday, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US indicated that the Baltimore Ravens expect to see Jones in the lineup for their Week 1 game at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 13.
"With Jones back on the practice field for organized team activity sessions well ahead of schedule," La Canfora wrote, "it’s creating a belief within that organization that a return for the start of the regular season is a real possibility. The Colts will still have to assess him closely throughout the summer, but the fact that he is being cleared to do the non-contract football activities taking place in a team structure is a pretty strong indicator of their intent."
Jones' well-known injury history may prevent the Colts from rushing him back this September unless he leaves little doubt that he is 100 percent at the time. During his New York Giants tenure, Jones missed a handful of games due to worrisome neck issues. He then suffered a torn ACL in the fall of 2023.
More recently, Jones was slowed by a reported fracture in his fibula in Week 12 of the 2025 season. Nevertheless, the Colts signed him to a two-year, $88M contract that could be worth up to $100M this offseason.
"I don’t know the specifics of what’s going on there," an unnamed general manager told La Canfora about the Colts' handling of Jones this spring, "but if he’s doing seven-on-seven work now, that tells me they think he is in play for the first game."
Additionally, the fact that 2023 first-round draft pick Anthony Richardson Sr. and 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard remain the next men up on the depth chart has led some outsiders to assume that Jones will be Indianapolis' 2026 Week 1 QB1 unless he experiences a setback at some point over the next few months.
