Fine print in Bruce Cassidy's contract is why Oilers won't get interview

According to a few sources, including NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, Bruce Cassidy’s contract is one that was unique to the coach and why the Vegas Golden Knights are getting away with not granting permission for Cassidy to interview with other teams. The Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings have both requested interviews. Both have been denied, and the NHL is standing behind the Golden Knights.

Despite the fact it seems like everyone except the Golden Knights are bothered by their withholding Cassidy from the coaching market, the legalities of his contract are such that the NHL has no choice. In fact, Daly hinted that Cassidy’s contract, in particular, would not allow the NHL to step in.

Apparently, some coaches have out clauses worked into their deals. Cassidy does not.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun was on "Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer" and specifically went into that. He noted that NHL players all have standardized contracts. While the NHL Coaches Association tries to help coaches get the best deals, there is no standardized form of a deal, which means that coaches can work in all sorts of conditions and concessions. In Minnesota, for example, Bruce Boudreau had advisory shares.

LeBrun said coaches can negotiate different things. Daly alluded to it with Cassidy. Some contracts have an out-clause, while Cassidy’s does not. LeBrun noted, “Obviously, a wake-up call for any head coach in that position to want to negotiate that kind of language.”

He then added that, despite the legalities, the ethical thing to do would be to let Cassidy interview. Given that the Golden Knights only got their current coach in John Tortorella because the Flyers allowed them an interview and to pick up the remaining tab on his deal, it feels like Vegas should know to pay it forward.
