Giants' Matt Chapman sets career high in win over Cubs

It's not often a baseball player does enough to win a game all on his own, but that's exactly what happened on Friday night when the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs to the tune of 18-3.

Clubbing two home runs, Giants' third baseman Matt Chapman had the game of his life in extending San Francisco's win streak to three games and securing the series opener against the Cubs. Chapman's two-homer game led to a career-high in RBIs with eight, a rare achievement for anyone throughout Major League Baseball history.

Matt Chapman set a new career-high with eight RBIs

Now among a group of only 121 players to ever drive home eight runs in a single game, Chapman went 2-for-3 on the day. He first went yard in the top of the fourth inning, sending a grand slam into Wrigley Field's ivy in left center field.

Chapman hit his second home run of the game in his next at-bat in the sixth, making that one a three-run shot.

His eight-RBI performance marks the most for any MLB player this season and exceeds his previous single-game best of seven.

Off to a slow start before Friday, Chapman has now doubled his season total for home runs with four and has 31 RBI in 63 games. He's hitting only .241 with a .317 OBP and a .367 slug.

Chapman has struggled throughout most of the season

The 33-year-old 10-year veteran surpassed 20 home runs in each of the past two seasons, hitting 21 in 2025 and 27 in 2024. His career-high came back in 2019 when he finished with 36 home runs and 91 RBIs with the then-Oakland Athletics.

San Francisco is now hoping Chapman's hot bat stays ignited throughout the rest of their series in Chicago and beyond.
