Head coach Robert Saleh and others within the Tennessee Titans are seemingly hoping that the hiring of former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll as the team's new offensive coordinator will help second-year quarterback Cam Ward take a big leap later this year.
The first overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Ward completed under 60 percent of his pass attempts as a rookie. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Saleh dismissed concerns about the accuracy issues Ward has experienced during springtime workouts open to media members.
"Every quarterback is going to miss a couple here and there," Saleh said, per Turron Davenport of ESPN. "I would say Brock Purdy's one of the most accurate quarterbacks in all of football, and he would miss a lot of throws, and that's OK. These guys are all working on a few things here and there."
According to Pro Football Reference, Ward ended the 2025 regular season ranked 31st in the league with a 59.8 percent completion percentage. He was also 32nd with a 33.2 adjusted QBR and 31st with an 80.2 passer rating.
Ward suffered an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during Tennessee's Week 18 game this past January, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to think he will be bothered by the setback later this year. On Tuesday, he said he is trying some new things "every play" during practice, depending on "what coverage our defense presents."
Questions about how long a coaching staff that didn't draft Ward will stick with him could grow loud in a hurry if he fails to impress with his play this coming fall. Like Saleh, Daboll doesn't seem to be concerned about what he has seen from Ward during practices that more often than not go ignored by casual fans.
"We're making good progress," Daboll said. "You have to make the mistakes, and you have to see it. We're still learning. But I'm very pleased with where he's at; he understands the offense well. I think his feet are really good. His eye discipline, his vision down the field. Cam can make all the throws."
