Rory McIlroy reacts to new PGA Tour schedule

On Tuesday, the PGA Tour announced it will debut a new schedule in 2028 featuring two series, a promotion-relegation system and an improved Tour Championship in a match-play format.

Most golf fans will enjoy the new competitive structure , and it sounds as if Rory McIlroy approves, as well.

McIlroy, who's become an unofficial spokesman for the PGA Tour ever since the LIV Golf League emerged in 2022, released a supportive statement about the upcoming changes on Tuesday morning.

"Today’s announcement is a positive step for professional golf," McIlroy said in the statement, per Golf Channel. "As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future."

Under the new schedule, the PGA Tour will operate in a two-track system with the top players competing in the Championship Series and second-tier players battling in the Challenger Series. Players in the Challenger Series — a version of the minor leagues — will have chances to gain promotion to the Championship Series by winning multiple events, winning a major championship or finishing inside the top 20 in the season standings.

The top 90 players in the Championship Series at the end of the season will avoid relegation. A select number of the top players will also be eligible for a limited series of international events in the fall in conjunction with the DP World Tour. McIlroy, who doesn't get to play much outside of the United States, is especially excited about that addition to the schedule.

"I’ve always been proud to compete around the world, and the collaboration between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour is one founded in the betterment of the game globally," he said. "The commitment to elevate some of these historic international tournaments and national opens is incredibly important for the game and something I’m very supportive of."

Rory McIlroy believes in the future of the PGA Tour

The PGA Tour hasn't been in the healthiest spot in the 2020s. Not only did LIV Golf poach top talents such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Joaquin Niemann, but it also forced the PGA Tour to make schedule changes based solely on leveling the financial playing field.

No-cut Signature Events with limited fields filled the star players' pockets, but they aren't truly meritocratic and aren't as entertaining for fans. Removing no-cut tournaments and returning to full-field events every week is exactly what players and fans want.

The PGA Tour is on its way to healing under CEO and commissioner Brian Rolapp, and McIlroy can feel it.

"Over the last few years, golf has faced a period of uncertainty and division, which has not been in the best interests of the players, or the fans of the game," the Northern Irishman said. "Today, we are putting the fans first, and I am excited about the future of our sport.
