Matthew Boyd returning to Cubs rotation on Thursday

The Chicago Cubs have dealt with a world of starting pitcher injuries this season. An incoming roster move on Thursday, though, may help the Cubs with their depth issues.

Matthew Boyd will be returning

After missing the previous two months with multiple injuries, left-hander Matthew Boyd will be returning to the mound. Chicago manager Craig Counsell announced Wednesday that Boyd would be activated for Thursday's series finale against the New York Mets.

Boyd's last outing came on May 3, when he went six innings, allowing just two runs in a winning decision. His season stats showcase a 2-1 record with an inflated 6.00 ERA through just 24 innings.

Chicago's starting rotation has been depleted

With Cabrera hitting the injured list, the Cubs now have Justin Steele, Cade Horton, Jameson Taillon, Ben Brown and Cabrera all on the shelf.

None are close to returning, leading Counsell to describe his starting staff as "in a rough spot" after Tuesday's win.

Chicago badly needs pitching help

It is clear that if Chicago decides to become buyers at the trade deadline, it will shift all its focus toward starting pitching help.

It may not be a seismic move for a Tarik Skubal or Sandy Alcantara, but the rotation will definitely need depth if the Cubs have hopes of making a deep postseason run.
