It looked like Carson Hocevar was going to shock the world in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Sonoma Raceway Saturday, as he shot to the top of the board above Shane van Gisbergen, the defending Sonoma polesitter and race winner, during the second group of qualifying.
But then Ty Gibbs put together the best lap of the afternoon at 74.829 seconds, winning the pole for the third time in his Cup career and the first time since 2024.
It's the first time since he's been in a Cup Series or O'Reilly Series qualifying session at Sonoma that van Gisbergen has not won the pole.
Hocevar will join Gibbs on the front row.
"I didn't feel like my lap was very good," Hocevar told truTV. "I was super happy about that, but I didn't think it was amazing."
Defending Cup champion Kyle Larson, Michael McDowell and Ross Chastain rounded out the top five, with van Gisbergen, Chase Briscoe, AJ Allmendinger, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano completing the top 10.
Other notable qualifying efforts include points leader Tyler Reddick in 11th, Christopher Bell in 14th, Chris Buescher in 15th, Connor Zilisch in 17th and Chase Elliott in 18th.
Logano was the highest-qualifying Ford driver.
Bubba Wallace crashed on his qualifying lap, while Noah Gragson was unable to make a lap after brake fluid issues in practice. Van Gisbergen also spun during qualifying, though he did not hit anything and remained on track.
Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 will go green shortly after 3:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on TNT, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Pre-race coverage will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET on TNT and PRN.
