Bo Bichette reveals this goal amid Mets' struggles, trade rumors

A Monday update suggested that the New York Mets could at least listen to offers for infielder Bo Bichette before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.

This is in part because "people familiar with the Mets' thinking say they still do not have a sense of whether Bichette will opt out of his three-year" contract at the end of what has become a frustrating season for just about everybody involved.

Later, Bichette spoke with Laura Albanese of Newsday about his mindset and his uncertain future.

Bo Bichette still wants to be the "best version of myself" with the Mets

"Right now, I’m working really hard to make sure my season ends the way I want it to," Bichette explained. "I don’t think there’s any way where I could be in the mind frame of where my future is right now when I’m trying to be the best version of myself."

Back in January, Bichette signed a three-year, $126M deal that included opt-outs after the first and second years to join the Mets. He then endured a rough start to his Mets tenure, and he acknowledged in May that making the transition to New York was tougher than he had expected.

That said, Baseball Reference shows that Bichette slashed .352/.374/.557 with a .931 OPS across 30 games from June 3 through July 6. In total, he has delivered 10 home runs and 50 RBI for a Mets team that began Tuesday with a record of 38-53 on the season.

Bo Bichette "getting more comfortable" with Mets

"I’m getting more comfortable, being more of myself," Bichette said. "I think [hitting] instincts come from being fully immersed in the game, and typically, when hitters struggle, they’re looking at themselves and trying to figure out what they can do better instead of playing the game."

Bichette's contract has a no-trade clause, and Albanese noted that "it’s unclear if another club would pay him more than the $42M he stands to make next season" per the terms of his existing deal. During his chat with Albanese, Bichette insisted that his current plans involve "showing up every day to win games" and working "to try to become a better player no matter what happens."

It remains to be seen if he and the Mets will agree to a divorce before Aug. 3 comes to an end.
