Shortly after Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and his wife, actress Hailee Steinfeld, announced the birth of their daughter this past spring, he revealed that he was hoping "dad strength" would eventually kick in and help him guide the Bills to a Super Bowl championship.
During a recent chat with Mike Kadlick of Sports Illustrated, Allen expanded on his mindset ahead of the start of training camp in late July.
"I think the goal is obviously the same: to win a Super Bowl," Allen said. "The 'want to' doesn't change, but the 'why' changes. Now I’ve got a daughter that will be looking up to me and taking after what I do. And even as someone so little and so young, I do feel like they absorb everything and they see everything. So making sure that I continue to work hard and do what’s necessary to try to win. And teach her that something so great, so crazy out in the distance that doesn’t seem attainable, through hard work, can be attainable."
A 2018 first-round draft pick, Allen has yet to play in a Super Bowl. The combination of Allen and former Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott went 0-4 against the Kansas City Chiefs in postseason play before the Bills fired McDermott this past winter. The Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to serve as McDermott's replacement, and it's assumed that Allen wanted to continue playing for Brady.
While speaking with Kadlick, Allen insisted that he and Brady are "on the same page" as it pertains to pursuing a championship.
"He’s in a position where I’ve told him, 'I want you to coach me as you would coach anybody else,'" Allen said about his working relationship with Brady. "So there’s that type of relationship that we have where we can fully push each other to be the best that we can be and very much looking forward to that this year."
As shared by ESPN, the Bills won the two final AFL championships (1964, 1965) before the introduction of the Super Bowl following the 1966 campaign. Buffalo is now one of a dozen franchises that have never earned at least one Super Bowl Sunday victory.
As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Bills and the Baltimore Ravens tied for second among the betting favorites at +1000 odds to win Super Bowl LXI.
"We want to bring a Lombardi Trophy to Western New York," Allen added. "I truly believe it’s one of the last great sports stories out there, to win a Super Bowl in Buffalo. And our team is very motivated to try to go do that."
