The Philadelphia 76ers are already one of the most improved teams in the NBA.
Swapping Paul George for Jaylen Brown was a huge step toward championship contention, and the sky is the limit with Bob Myers building their new roster. The Sixers are reportedly trying to make a run at LeBron James, and they have the financial flexibility and appealing roster to do so, especially after adding Brown.
Nevertheless, ESPN insider Brian Windhorst believes that there's an even bigger reason James would want to join them: Tyrese Maxey. Speaking on "Get Up," he made a case about their Klutch Sports connection and a potential pathway to Philadelphia.
“I don’t necessarily know if it is the most attractive because you’re making a basketball case, and what LeBron has said is that it’s a happiness case. Can he be happy living in Philly? The big factor here is Tyrese Maxey,” Windhorst said. “I know that so much of the focus is on Jaylen Brown because that's how Philly got into this conversation — they traded for Jaylen Brown last week.”
However, as great a player as Brown is, Windhorst insisted that Maxey's ties to Klutch Sports — the same agency that represents LeBron — could pave the way for a move to the City of Brotherly Love.
“But the reason I think he's seriously looking at Philadelphia is because of Tyrese Maxey, and that connection is with Klutch Sports, his agency, that he is basically is a core founder of alongside Rich Paul. It's the Tyrese Maxey connection that draw him in. That was the same thing with Anthony Davis that got Anthony Davis to the Lakers.”
Of course, this goes way beyond agents and representation. Maxey is one of the league's rising stars, and he's the new face of the franchise, even with Brown and Joel Embiid there.
Nick Nurse's team is absolutely stacked. It signed Dean Wade and also has a promising guard in VJ Edgecombe. Adding James to the mix would make it the best team in the East, no doubt.
Windhorst has covered James throughout his career, so he knows his thought process. And given who Rich Paul and Klutch Sports are and how they operate, this theory isn't far-fetched at all.
