This past December, Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson raised eyebrows when he acknowledged that the 2025 campaign was "probably one of the most difficult seasons" he had endured.
The Vikings later signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to compete with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy for the team's starting job. During Wednesday's edition of the "Yahoo Sports Daily" program, Vikings reporter Matthew Coller of Purple Insider shared a warning to the club about Jefferson's future.
"If you’re talking about another year of inaccurate passes, frustrations, not competing for the playoffs, the fact that the best wide receiver in football has zero playoff wins to this point is not a fact that is lost on Justin Jefferson, I don’t think," Coller explained, per Eduardo Razo of Heavy. "So it is a really, really important year for him and the organization."
Jefferson has played only for the Vikings since they selected him in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he signed a four-year contract extension in June 2024. That said, he became the subject of trade rumors last fall as he seemed to look frustrated about the state of the Minnesota offense during games.
"The way that contracts are set up these days allows even more for Justin Jefferson to potentially try to ask out if this doesn’t work," Coller said. "I don’t know if that’s something that he would ever want to do, but contracts are generally set up to have lower cap hits in the early years and then get super expensive at the end of the contract, which is where you negotiate an extension…It’s either you’re going to sign an extension with this team, stay with them long term, lock yourself in, probably a Minnesota Viking for life. I know how much he admires Larry Fitzgerald, and the fact that he was with one franchise for his entire career. I think that’s what Justin Jefferson absolutely wants. He’s very close with (Vikings head coach) Kevin O’Connell. They’ve built a great relationship through the years."
At least one report from June indicated that neither Murray nor McCarthy "performed drastically better than the other" during springtime workouts open to media members. That doesn't necessarily mean the two signal-callers will both flop with the Vikings this coming fall, but such comments understandably sparked concerns among fans about the team's quarterback situation and about Jefferson's future.
"He wants to set records," Coller added about Jefferson. "He wants to be considered the greatest wide receiver to ever play. I think we all have Jerry Rice in the No. 1 spot, but that’s who Justin is chasing. ...And if you feel like your team cannot get the quarterback position solved and it’s hurting your ability to be one of the greatest of all time, which of course he has all the talent to be able to do that, then I think, yeah, frustration would go along with pretty much anyone."
It remains to be seen if either McCarthy or Murray can keep Jefferson from feeling the type of frustration that could result in the receiver asking to be traded in early 2027.
