Darian Mensah has all the tools to be a superstar for the Miami Hurricanes in 2026.
A transfer from the Duke Blue Devils, he already flashed that superstar potential in 2025. Mensah threw for 3,937 yards and 34 touchdowns last season for Duke, compared to just six interceptions. He led the Blue Devils to their first outright ACC championship since 1962.
Miami was looking to replace Carson Beck and stealing Mensah from within the ACC was a massive priority for Mario Cristobal and his staff. Mensah had even committed to staying at Duke for 2026, but he entered his name into the transfer portal on the very last day.
Cristobal and the Hurricanes quickly swooped up Mensah in the portal, but they had to pay up for his services. Not only that, but they had to pay up for a settlement dispute Mensah had gotten into with Duke. The Blue Devils had sued the quarterback to try to keep him out of the transfer portal.
That's just how things roll in the NIL and transfer portal era.
According to On3's new NIL market evaluation, Mensah is expected to make $6.5 million in 2026. Not only does that make him the highest-paid quarterback in college football this season, but it also makes him the highest-paid player in college sports.
"Landing a premier quarterback on the final day of the portal came at a hefty price, and Mensah is set to be the highest-paid quarterback in college football this season," wrote Pete Nakos of On3. "The exit from Duke came with a price tag, with Mensah reaching a settlement to end a contract dispute."
To put Mensah's expected NIL earnings in perspective, the next college football player on the list is Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, who is expected to earn $5 million in NIL money. He checks in at No. 4, though, behind Kentucky power forward Milan Momcilovic ($6 million) and Louisville center Flory Bidunga ($6 million).
Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss are the only other college football players in the top 10 of expected NIL earnings for 2026, with both checking in at $5 million.
The point is, Miami paid dearly for the chance to land Mensah in the transfer portal. The Hurricanes did it because they believe he can help them win a national championship, but now, that's the only result that will financially make sense in Coral Gables.
