Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll matches MLB legend Lou Gehrig with latest triple

In the top of the fifth inning, Corbin Carroll sent a pitch to deep right center field. The ball landed shy of a home run, but he ended up making it all the way to third base for a triple. 

The three-base hit was part of the Arizona Diamondbacks' 10-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. But it also meant so much more for Carroll and the early-trajectory of his career. 

Corbin Carroll is in a tie for the most triples among active players 

Carroll now has 12 triples on the season and 55 for his career, a number that moves him into a tie with established veteran Mike Trout and Starling Marte for the most among active players. 

In contrast to Trout and Marte, who have both played in over 1,500 MLB games, Carroll recorded his 55 triples in just 587. And based his overall success through half of his fifth season in the Big Leagues, Carroll's accomplishments now have his name next to a baseball legend.

With his latest triple, Carroll joined New York Yankees icon Lou Gehrig as only the second player in MLB history to hit at least 55 triples and crush 85 plus home runs in only 587 games. Gehrig finished his career with 493 home runs and 163 triple in 17 seasons.
