The Kansas City Chiefs didn't do much to help their offense this offseason.
Bringing back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator and signing Kenneth Walker III were big moves, but the passing game remains pretty much untouched.
That's why Rashee Rice, who's projected to be the WR1, must step up after yet another controversy-riddled offseason.
According to ESPN insider Nate Taylor, the Chiefs are still weighing their options about potentially giving him a contract extension, and even training camp will be crucial.
“The Chiefs are hopeful Rice can return to form, especially after his own procedure this offseason to remove loose debris in his right knee that was causing inflammation,” Taylor wrote. “Rice, who is entering a contract year, will need to show better consistency running his routes and catching the ball to earn the role as Mahomes’ top receiver.”
Rice showed flashes of stardom in his rookie season, but injuries, a suspension, and inconsistency have stopped him from maintaining that momentum over the next couple of years.
Now, fresh off a 30-day jail sentence that prevented him from rehabbing from a knee procedure, all eyes will be on him.
While his chemistry with Patrick Mahomes is pretty evident, and he has the talent to be a legitimate contributor to this team, his decisions off the field have left plenty to be desired.
Now, it's up to him to show the Chiefs that, despite all the red flags, he's worthy of a lofty investment and they'd be better off ignoring all the alarms.
