Patriots HC Mike Vrabel shares update on Gabe Jacas drama

When the New England Patriots selected pass-rusher Gabe Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, they likely couldn't have guessed all of the drama that would be associated with that decision. 

Jacas remained unsigned as of Friday, which is why he hasn't yet joined his teammates for the start of training camp. While speaking with reporters, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the Jacas situation.

"Well, continuing to work through the contract. I think that those have been positive, obviously, between the club and his representative, and hopefully, we’ll get him in here sooner rather than later," Vrabel said, per Mark Daniels of MassLive. "Not going to put a timeline on it or a time frame, but spoken to Gabe personally. Again, excited to get him in when he’s under contract."

Back in June, Vrabel suggested that the Patriots didn't need to add a big-name pass-rusher to their roster ahead of the 2026 season. Presumably, that could change if New England loses somebody to a summer injury or if Jacas fails to adequately catch up whenever he puts pen to paper on his deal. 

According to Daniels, "the hold-up on Jacas’ contract is likely tied to the rookie seeking guaranteed money while the team remains hesitant because of his injury." For a piece published on June 14, Mike Reiss of ESPN shared that "a source familiar with Jacas' recovery said he underwent a knee procedure that was described as a 'clean-up.'" 

"There are contractual issues that come up and a lot of things that occur throughout those rookie contracts," Vrabel added. "But every contract is unique. Every contract is different, and it’ll get resolved. I’m positive that it will."

What do Patriots know about Gabe Jacas' recovery?

What the Patriots did and/or didn't know about Jacas' health ahead of the draft has been a mystery to outsiders for months. It sounds like Vrabel and Co. don't know much about Jacas' recovery as of Friday. 

"I mean, I can only go by what he says," Vrabel said about Jacas. "And so when he gets here, we’ll evaluate that. Of course, be as smart as we can, as possible, just to see, because we haven’t seen him with us. But I would say that, use the words cautiously optimistic. But again, those conversations have been great, and I’m excited to see where he’s at."

The "when he gets here" portion of Vrabel's comments could lead one to believe he doesn't know when Jacas and the Patriots will come to an agreement regarding the player's contract. At this point, it's fair to wonder if Jacas will be ready for the start of the regular season.
