Happy 51st birthday to 14-time MLB All-Star, 10-time Silver Slugger, three-time MVP, and 2009 World Series champion, Alex Rodriguez!
Roriguez was selected with the first-overall pick in the 1993 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, and he made his Big League debut on July 8 1994. He played in just 65 games between 1994 and 1995, but took over the starting shortstop role for the Mariners in 1996 and never looked back.
He reached the 30-home run milestone for the first time of his career while finishing with the highest batting average in all baseball (.358). A-Rod hit at least 30 homers in 14 of the next 15 seasons, leading his league in dingers five times and MLB three times.
Rodriguez spent the first 10 seasons of his career between Seattle and Texas before signing a major contract with the New York Yankees ahead of the 2004 campaign. He was a member of the team that infamously blew a 3-0 lead in the ALCS to the Boston Red Sox, but also finally got over the hump to help deliver the franchise’s 27th World Series.
Despite his dominance on the diamond, Rodriguez is yet to join many of his peers in the Hall of Fame due to his multiple connections to performance enhancing drugs, including a season-long suspension in 2014.
After he retired in 2016, A-Rod has spent time as a pundit for Fox’s baseball coverage and is now also an owner of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. While a controversial player throughout much of his career, Rodriguez was one of the most complete hitters in baseball history. With that being said, can you name the players to post a .300 batting average and bash 50 homers in the same season?
Good luck!
