Klint Kubiak announces Kirk Cousins, Fernando Mendoza decision ahead of training camp

One of the more intriguing storylines to follow during NFL training camp was expected to be the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback battle between veteran Kirk Cousins and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

While there still may be competition through training camp, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak made it clear Tuesday as to who his starting quarterback will be.

Kirk Cousins is the Raiders starting quarterback

"When we go out to practice tomorrow, Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback," Kubiak said via NFL insider Ian Rapoport. "He's the guy, and he deserves it because he's played really good football."

Cousins signed a five-year, $172 million contract with Las Vegas in the offseason that is really just a one-year, $20 million deal with a club option for $$80 million for the following two years.

What kind of leash will Kirk Cousins have?

Cousins was benched by the Atlanta Falcons due to poor production less than one full season into a four-year, $180 million contract he signed before the 2024 season.

The only reason Cousins reached double-digit starts last season was because of injuries to Falcons starter Michael Penix Jr. He did, though, produce at a high level last season when his number was called.

With the Raiders only on the hook for one year and $20 million with Cousins and with Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick waiting in the wings, it's hard to imagine that Cousins will have a long leash if he struggles in the early parts of the season.
