Guardians' Gavin Williams joins rare company with 12-strikeout performance

Despite being on the losing end of Tuesday night's game, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams joined rare company with another stellar performance.

Gavin Williams strikes out 11-plus for the fourth start in a row

Williams toed the rubber Tuesday night having 11 strikeouts in each of his previous three starts.

That streak extended to four starts in a row after Tuesday when Williams punched out 12 across seven innings of two-run ball against the Cincinnati Reds.

Williams became the first pitcher to collect 11-plus strikeouts in four consecutive starts since 2021 when Shane Bieber did it as a member of the Cleveland rotation.

It is just the fourth time in franchise history that a pitcher has accomplished the feat, joining Bieber, Trevor Bauer (2018) and Corey Kluber (2015).

Cleveland would be sneaky dangerous with the addition of another arm

Cleveland currently trails the Chicago White Sox by two games for the AL Central lead but holds a one-game lead over the Minnesota Twins for the third AL wild-card position.

That means the Guardians should be buyers ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, a place they could potentially make a move to upgrade a pitching staff that already ranks eighth in team ERA (3.75).

With the 1-2 punch of Williams and left-hander Parker Messick (2.59 ERA), the Guardians are well positioned to be a tough team to score against in a postseason series.

The addition of a third starting pitcher would give Cleveland arguably the second-best rotation in the American League and make it a dark horse to make a deep run in the 2026 postseason.
