Why Arvell Reese is turning heads at Giants training camp

The New York Giants selected Arvell Reese with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft because of his ability to pressure quarterbacks. However, the rookie linebacker is showing that his value could extend beyond rushing the passer.

The New York Post’s Paul Schwartz reported early Sunday that Reese’s coverage ability has stood out during training camp, giving New York a potential answer to a lingering problem in the middle of its defense.

The former Ohio State standout and national champion displayed that range Friday when he broke up a Jaxson Dart pass intended for Odell Beckham Jr. in zone coverage. Reese used his 32.5-inch arms to tip the ball away and prevent the completion.

"I think he looks really good," Giants head coach John Harbaugh said, as noted in the piece by Schwartz. "He got that wingspan out there and batted that ball down. That was a great football play."

The Giants drafted Reese after the New York Jets selected David Bailey second overall. Attention then centered on how Reese could join Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux as another pass-rushing option.

Reese may instead provide immediate help in coverage alongside veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. That ability could force quarterbacks to hold the ball longer and create more opportunities for New York’s edge-rushers.

The Giants have struggled to find consistent coverage production at linebacker. Bobby Okereke recorded 10 passes defensed during his first season with New York in 2023, but his effectiveness has declined. Carter said linebackers coach Frank Bush has been impressed by Reese’s development.

"Obviously, he’s got all the physical traits, but he said more importantly, the mental side, he’s been doing a really good job," Carter told Schwartz.

Reese’s length, athleticism and awareness give defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson flexibility. If the rookie handles coverage responsibilities while remaining a threat near the line, the Giants can move him around without revealing their intentions. That versatility is why the 20-year-old rookie is turning heads at camp and could quickly become a vital piece of New York’s rebuilt defense.
