Injury tests confirm the worst-case scenario for promising Falcons second-year LB Jalon Walker

Walker flashed franchise cornerstone potential after the Falcons selected the former Georgia Bulldogs standout with pick No. 15 in the 2025 NFL Draft. He played 15 games and started nine for the Falcons, finishing third on the team in sacks (5.5) and fifth in pressures (13), per Pro Football Reference.

Many thought Walker would build on the strong rookie season in 2026. Former Pro Football Focus analyst Dalton Wasserman named him a second-year breakout candidate shortly after the 2025 season. He cited his 81.3 run-defense grade (No. 6 among edge-rushers) as a reason to buy into the LB. 

"Walker was supposed to go through a longer transition period in the run game as he made the move from [off-ball] linebacker to edge-rusher," wrote Wasserman. "If he maintains that production while continuing to improve as a pass-rusher, he could soon become a bona fide star." 

Walker's progress gave Falcons fans reason for optimism about the future of their defense. Last season, Atlanta went 8-9 and missed the playoffs but finished with the second-most sacks (57) in the league behind the Denver Broncos (68). 

Some of the hope for Atlanta's defense has now subsided after Walker's injury, and with second-year LB James Pearce Jr. likely to receive a suspension. Pearce was arrested in February on three felony charges, which will be cleared if he completes a diversion program as part of a legal arrangement.

The loss of Walker is magnified, given the team's questions on offense. The Falcons are holding a starting quarterback battle between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. Whoever wins the job, Atlanta may need him to pick up the slack for a defense that's beginning to look weaker than expected.
