Vikings' Kyler Murray has golden opportunity amid J.J. McCarthy competition

People are buzzing about the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition, and for good reason. There was a time that it was a total given J.J. McCarthy would be this team's franchise quarterback. The Michigan product was selected with that in mind. But, it hasn't happened.

So, enter Kyler Murray. The Vikings signed him after a successful run with the Arizona Cardinals, and now, he's battling it out with McCarthy for starting honors.

One NFL analyst thinks this is Murray's to lose. Plus, he believes if Murray delivers this season, that'll be a golden opportunity for him to sign a special deal with the Vikings.

Vikings' Kyler Murray has huge opportunity

In a piece for Fox Sports out on Thursday, Ben Arthur discusses a range of players in the NFL with the most to gain in 2026. He has Murray on that list and said some interesting things about him.

"Murray signed a league minimum, one-year contract with the Vikings after his release by Arizona," he writes in the piece. "If he wins Minnesota's starting quarterback job and regains Pro Bowl form, a top-end QB deal will be waiting for him in the spring."

That's true, but then again, look at the blockbuster season Sam Darnold had before the Vikings let him walk away. We know how that story ended.

Plus, even though Murray is good, he only appeared in five games last season because of a foot injury. Over those games, he had 962 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and three interceptions. He also had 173 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. So, those stats are solid, but it'll be a different level of competition if he's starting in 17 games this season.
