Rookie QB Ty Simpson shines in Rams preseason debut

The whole thing is going to be fascinating to watch unfold over the next couple of years.

There is no more important position on the field than quarterback, and it can literally make-or-break whether or not a team is a Super Bowl contender.

While the Rams have a top-tier quarterback right now, it is important to remember that Stafford is one of the oldest starters in the league at XX and is probably not going to play more than another year or two before retiring. He has also had some major injury concerns over the past couple of years that also need to be taken into consideration.

Sometimes the best time to select a quarterback is when you do not actually need one, especially if a potential starter falls into your lap. The Green Bay Packers have been very effective with that approach over the past two decades. They drafted Aaron Rodgers at the end of the 2005 first round when Brett Favre was still on the roster, and then selected Rodgers' eventual replacement, Jordan Love, a couple of years before trading Rodgers. 

It is a big reason why they have maintained consistent success for so many years.

The Rams obviously think they can follow that same path. Given the offensive-minded head coach Sean McVay and his work with quarterbacks, Simpson may have ended up with the exact right team.
