Eagles could face cap troubles with Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean up for new deals soon

All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has been among the best cover men in the league since joining in 2024 and will be ready to cash in on a huge deal next summer. He’ll be extension-eligible after this season, and with his teammate — defensive back Cooper DeJean — in the same boat next season, Philadelphia will have a difficult decision to make.

The team already extended lynchpin defensive tackles Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis this offseason, and with a handful of enormous contracts on the offensive side of the ball as well, it just doesn’t seem like there will be enough money to go around.

Why Eagles could explore trades to free up cap room

We’ve seen contenders experience situations like this before — like the Kansas City Chiefs who moved two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie this offseason — so Philadelphia may have to emulate that strategy.

Dedicating more than half of the team’s cap space to a handful of players doesn’t seem like a logical path to success, and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is a cap wizard, so there may already be a plan in place. They may not want to trade Mitchell or DeJean, but it might be one of the only ways to give the team some cap relief in the future.

While the price continues to rise at a number of positions, the best way to offset the financial stress is to draft well. The Eagles have been one of the better teams in the league in that aspect, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them start adding some secondary pieces through the draft.

Gonzalez’s new deal surpassing Witherspoon’s would only put more pressure on the Eagles to free up some money. There are a lot of players almost ready to get paid and just not enough cap space to make it happen, so Roseman will need to get creative.
