The Minnesota Vikings knew the injury sustained by defensive back Jamal Adams on Saturday was not good. On Sunday, they received confirmation.
Adams is going to miss the entire 2026 season with a knee injury, according to multiple reports on Sunday, including The Athletic.
Adams suffered a non-contact knee injury early in their game against the New York Giants and had to be carted off the field. It puts a dent in the Vikings' potential safety depth, adds another layer to the league's grass vs. turf argument, and also creates some uncertainty for where Adams' career goes next.
Adams' role for the 2026 season was a bit of an unknown, but he had the versatility to be a potentially disruptive weapon for defensive coordinator Brian Flores. A safety for the bulk of his career, Adams had also played some linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2025 season and could have been a jack-of-all-trades in the Vikings defense.
He signed a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the team in free agency.
While it takes a potential weapon away from Flores and the Vikings defense, it also creates some long-term uncertainty for Adams.
A season-ending knee injury for a 31-year-old defensive back is a potential problem for any player that would be difficult to come back from. Especially for a player with Adams' injury history, which includes a quad injury that limited him to just one game in 2022.
He appeared in all 17 games for the Raiders a year ago, which is just the third time in his career he has played in more than 12 games in a season.
