49ers TE George Kittle provides injury update: 'I don’t think that’d be a very smart idea'

George Kittle is still targeting an improbable return for the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener. The star tight end also identified the next two weeks as the stretch that will determine whether he boards the plane for Australia.

George Kittle keeps Week 1 return alive

Kittle is not ready to surrender his audacious Week 1 goal.

The 49ers tight end tore his Achilles during the team’s playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in January. That injury initially made a return for the beginning of the 2026 season feel almost impossible.

Kittle apparently missed the memo about following a convenient rehabilitation schedule.

Speaking Sunday, Kittle said he has reached the necessary GPS speeds and physical benchmarks during his recovery. He remains confident that he will avoid opening the regular season on the physically unable to perform list, which would require him to miss at least four games.

His next test will be returning to practice and absorbing contact. Kittle acknowledged that running and completing rehabilitation exercises cannot fully prepare him for the charming experience of being tackled by NFL defenders.

“I don’t want my first time in pads traveling to Australia. I don’t think that’d be a very smart idea. These next couple of weeks are everything. That’ll let me know whether I’m able to play Week 1 or not.”

The 49ers will open the 2026 season against the NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. The international trip adds another complication to Kittle’s recovery, as San Francisco must determine his availability before making the lengthy flight to Melbourne.

Kittle added that the next couple of weeks will determine whether he can play in the opener. If he cannot practice before the trip, he plans to remain home and continue his rehabilitation rather than travel merely to stand on the sideline.

That is not a promise that Kittle will face the Rams in Melbourne. It is confirmation that Week 1 has not been removed from consideration.

The 49ers should protect George Kittle from himself

Kittle’s confidence is encouraging, especially considering the severity of his injury. He said the rehabilitation process has allowed him to rebuild his calf strength and establish the physical foundation needed to begin moving faster.

There is still an enormous difference between reaching target speeds and playing tight end in an NFL game.

Kittle is not returning as a receiver who can avoid contact and operate primarily in space. Blocking defensive linemen and linebackers is a major part of his value. He even explained Sunday that dropping below 240 pounds leaves him feeling too light to block effectively.

San Francisco consequently cannot treat medical clearance as the only requirement. Kittle needs enough padded practice work to prove he can plant, change direction and handle contact without favoring the repaired leg.

The international opener further complicates the decision. The 49ers will be asking players to endure a lengthy flight, adjust to a dramatic time difference and compete against a division rival. That is a rough assignment for a healthy player, never mind someone returning from a torn Achilles.

Kittle is doing everything possible to give himself a chance. Now the 49ers must decide how much of that chance they are willing to take.

Week 1 would represent a remarkable comeback. Having Kittle healthy for the rest of the season would be considerably more valuable.
