The Athletic's Vincent Mercogliano recently discussed the situation of New York Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider, who extended his contract for one more season ahead of the 2026-27 NHL campaign.
Mercogliano raised the issue because it is striking that Schneider, 24, was offered an extension of only one year, which suggests general manager Chris Drury does not see a clear long-term future for the young defenseman.
"Telling that the Rangers kept his… extension to only one year; They still like the player; may not add up to give a long-term contract to a defenseman who's now No. 6 in the pecking order," Mercogliano said.
Schneider played 82 games during the 2025-26 season, scoring two goals and adding 16 assists for a total of 18 points. During the 2024-25 campaign, he appeared in 80 games, scoring six goals and adding 15 assists for 21 points.
In those two seasons, his contract was for two years with a $2.2 million cap hit. Schneider and the New York Rangers signed a new one-year agreement with a $5.5 million cap hit.
The Rangers therefore do not appear to trust Schneider in the long term, at least not right now, as they also reinforced their blue line with Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson, in addition to already having established players on the squad such as Adam Fox, Vladislav Gavrikov, and Matthew Robertson.
Perhaps a good season could redefine Schneider's future, but for that, we will have to wait.
